Great Day at Schick...One More thing!!!

This topped the day at Schick.  We had grade-level Olympics, a rockin' fieldtrip, memory boxes for lost loved ones, an oboe clinic, yoga in a classroom, and this...conferencing during intervention period conducted by Mrs. Brown, our new 5th grade teacher.

Here, Mrs. Brown is working with Davis L.  I think that they were a tad surprised to see their picture taken, but GREAT JOB, LITTLE LANCERS.  YOU'RE MAKING OUR SCHOOL GREAT!

OBOE CLINIC AFTER SCHOOL

What an awesome opportunity for our band students this afternoon.  Dr. Laib, a music professor from Mansfield University, helped student understand and refine their playing techniques and abilities in our music room.  Mr. and Mrs. Leidhecker helped facilitate this learning opportunity.  Dr. Laib teaches oboe and bassoon, and coaches woodwind chamber ensembles at Mansfield.   Scroll down for information about Dr. Laib found on the M.U. website.
Well Done, Little LANCERS.  GO SOCK.
DR. LAIB'S EDUCATION:

MM, University of Colorado
DM, Florida State University

Dr. Laib teaches oboe and bassoon, and coaches woodwind chamber ensembles. THIRD GRADE OLYMPICS...

Those 3rd grade teachers took the gold and silver in the roller cart luge.
Great excitement, Little LANCERS.  GO SCHICK.

Students Make Memory Boxes

Mrs. Cooley and one of her lunch bunch groups
made memory boxes today in honor of immediate
loved ones who have passed away.

The energy, the creativity and the memories brought tears
to the eyes of the adults and smiles to the faces of the students.
Well done, Mrs. Cooley and our Little LANCERS.  Go SCHICK.

Yoga in Third Grade.

Today, Mrs. McNett had a visitor to her classroom--her mother.  Her mom taught Mrs. McNett's class yoga.  Here are a few pictures from the afternoon.  If you look closely in the back you'll see Mrs. Duty participating.

Good Job, Little LANCERS.  Go Schick!

First & Second Grade Fieldtrip

First of all, our 249 students were terrific today at the Community Arts Center for the theatrical performance of Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type.

The performance was outstanding and literally every student was seen sitting on the edge of their seats.   This story is in the 2nd grade StoryTown program.

Second grade was comparing and contrasting the performance to the book this afternoon.  Mrs. Pryor's class listed TEN differences between the book and the show.  Well done.

First grade had Click, Clack, Moo packets in the theatre and were writing letters to Farmer Brown.

One student wrote, Dear Farmer Brown,  May I please have a blanket in the barn.  Your friend, Cow

Well done today, Little Lancers!   GO SCHICK!

Got an Email from Coach Hill....

Well, our 3rd grade girls played against the
4th grade girls at Ashkar Elementary in Hughesville this past Saturday.

I was busy refereeing/teaching on the court so I do not know the exact
basket count for the scrimmage. There were some made by both teams. I can
tell you the girls held their own against the older Little Lady Spartans.
I was proud to be a part of their team.

Our practices are over for this year. I enjoyed the time spent with them introducing some basic basketball skills. I am looking forward to watching them on the court throughout their school careers.

I have attached a couple of court pictures and a group shot. Use at your discretion. Names for the group shot from left to right are Sarah V, Bree D, Madelyn R, Maegan R, Maddie F, Cassie G, Josslyn D, Hailey Z, Julianna C, Lydia R, Cassy S, Teghan T, Hannah K, Allison D, Alexa D and Samantha S.

Coach Rich Hill

COACH HILL-  THANKS FOR MAKING THE LIVES OF OUR STUDENTS BETTER.
SINCERELY,
THE D.E. SCHICK ELEMENTARY FAMILY

Schick's Curriculum Team Rocked Tonight!!!

Tonight, the Schick committee members really showed why we are getting it done.  We presented information and showed that we are alligning our curriculum not only k-5, but onward and upward.

Kudos to Mrs. Ellis who received praise tonight for her released anchor packets which she is using to 'mass customize' instruction thoughout the math curriculum.  Mrs. Bomboy from the middle school indicated that she is now using this practice after seeing Mrs. Ellis' packets.  Mrs. Ellis also reported that she was ahead of the curve because the new Standards Allignment System (SAS) is making content practice easier.

Kudos, Team!!!

Visiting Author in Sun Gazette

Did you see our article about our visiting author???

Author says to illustrate and inspire creativity, show no fear

By GREG HAYES,

When Peter Catalanotto first began telling stories, he didn't tell them with words or by writing them down.

He told them with pictures.

While that may seem like standard practice for an author who began his career as an illustrator, Catalanotto did so because of his battle with dyslexia.

Despite that, the New York City native said he loved telling stories using pictures, particularly of animals - a subject of passion for him at young age. In elementary school, he was already a self-declared artist.
"If you love to tell stories with pictures and draw, you're just as much of an artist as I am," he told students at Schick Elementary School in Loyalsock Township on Thursday morning.
Catalanotto's career as a children's book author and illustrator began as an artist for newspapers, magazines and book covers - a progression of work that eventually led him to provide the artwork for Cynthia Rylant's book "All I See."

To date, Catalanotto's work is published in 38 books - 13 of which he has both written and illustrated.

Catalanotto described the evolution of illustrating scenes for a children's book in a presentation that showed the progression from a page of mere stick figures, which helps establish the location of characters, to the near-finished "dummy" product before publication.

When pitched with the idea of writing a book himself, Catalanotto told students he was hesitant because of his childhood struggle, but overpowered it by forming his own method of using pictures to help describe the story.

In describing the importance of brainstorming, he said to write down everything - no matter if the spelling or drawings are correct - because, from that, one can sort through "the mess" and develop a story.
First ideas "always stink," he said, but never throw those away, as they are the foundation from which to progress creatively.
The trick is to not worry about messing up, he said, because when people start fearing mistakes, "they stop being creative and become too scared to try anything new."

Catalanotto is the author and illustrator of such books as "Dylan's Day Out," "Ivan the Terrier" and "Matthew A.B.C."

Today, he lives in eastern Pennsylvania.

Also, Mr. Greevy and Mr. Rhoads were there to help support.

Did you go to the kick off? Well, if you want to hear some more info about it, where it is and what you do, then we're here to tell you.

The kick off happens at the beginning of the Fitness Challenge. Why do we do it? Well, to get you excited. That's why. It takes place at The Dome. If you ahve friends that aren't in your school then next year come to the kickoff because Loyalsock, Montoursville, Williamsport, Muncy, Hughesville, Jersey Shore, Montgomery, and South Williamsport schools are all involved in this wonderful event. If you're wondering if it happens in any other palces, that is a no. The only reason it happens at The Dome is because there are so many kids to have fun that there is no other place. A couple kids said that they go to the kickoff to meet with their friends and celebrate! If we were you, we'd write a letter to the Lycoming County Wellness Council because they put this whole event together just for us!
